History and origins of tarot

The origin of tarot is unknown but there are many theories about when and where the cards began.

Many believe that the first cards to enter Europe were the Naibi, in 14th century Italy. These cards were used as a teaching aid but progressed into a game before being used as a means of fortune telling.

The Naibi has five different categories, which are conditions of life, muses, planets, science and virtues.

Before these however in other parts of the world there are similar cards, which are also believed to have been the beginnings of tarot.

The Indian cards the Dasavatara, depicting the 10 incarnations of Vishnu are also believed to have been an early version of tarot, as are the Chinese ivory tablets with pictures of heaven and hell, which were noted in 1120.

In 1200 in Morocco the wise men of fez created a book of pictures as a means to communicate due to the many languages they encountered. It is believe by some that these images were the basis for tarot cards.

It is also believed that the tarot cards were brought into Europe by gypsies or the natives of Asia who were driven out into Europe.

There are also reports that the cards were brought back from the crusades although some would argue that the last crusade predates the tarot cards.

There is also the theory that when the Arabic numeral cards crossed into Europe, suits were added along with kings, queens and knaves and that these cards were then combined with the naibi cards to make tarot.

The oldest recorded reference to tarot was in 1299 in Siena.

In the 14th century a game is recorded called tarocco (the Italian for tarot). This game was played with a pack of cards called the Arcana, which were split into major and minor, as are tarot cards.

This game is still played in many parts of Europe and America.

The Best Decks To Use

The most popular deck is the Rider-Waite deck. In my opinion this is the best deck to use.

There are hundreds of other decks available with designs including pretty much everything!

Any of these decks will be sufficient for learning as long as you are easily able to distinguish which cards have been chosen.

The Rider-Waite cards are very good for this as most of the books on how to read tarot cards focus of this deck it makes interpreting them a lot easier.

Reading the cards

There are two ways you can do this.

The first and easiest way for beginners, is to buy a book with the meanings in it. These are available from bookshops and pretty much anywhere that sells tarot cards.

Many will also tell you how to do different spreads, which are the best spreads for different questions and also have meanings for reversing the cards.

The second way, which requires more practice and some psychic skill is to do it from the cards by ‘reading’ the pictures. Everyone will interpret the pictures differently and you can give a more in depth reading this way. Describe the picture, what you feel is going on in that picture, how do the colour’s make you feel, is the picture calm or chaotic, analyze everything in the picture.
