Ouija Boards

Ouija boards are known by many names including Spirit boards, Talking boards and Witch boards.

The Ouija board consists of two parts, the board and a planchette.

The board is usually made of wood with the letters of the alphabet, numbers 0 – 9 and the words yes, no and goodbye arranged around the board as below.

The Planchette is a heart shaped pointer with either three legs or two and a hole for a pencil to make up the third.

The name planchette is French meaning little prank.

The name Ouija was given by Charles Kennard who claimed to have been given the name during a session with the board in which he was told that this word was Egyptian for Good Luck.

The board can be used by any number of people. To use the board the people should place their fingers lightly on the planchette and one person should ask a question out loud. The Planchette should then move to give the reply by either moving to the letters to spell it out or by moving to yes or no.

The Ouija board was released in America in the 1890’s as a game.

In 1966, the Parker brothers bought the rights to the Ouija board and the manufacturing of the Ouija board was moved to Salem (possibly the reason that they are sometimes referred to as Witch boards).

There have been several versions of this game released throughout the years and it can still be found on sale today.

There are many stories about people who have had bad experiences with Ouija boards as there is no way to be sure that the person you are talking to is in fact who they say they are.

A story I found whilst researching Ouija boards, which has apparently been around for some time shows this and also advices that you do not take too much notice of anything that is said through the Ouija board.

We were having a Ouija session one evening and we contacted a friendly spirit who told us all about himself when he had a body. We asked him several questions about his life and family, to which he cheerfully responded. Next we asked him when he died and he said, "1948." He also mentioned that he liked talking to us and that he felt safe with the living. We then asked him the year of his birth. To this question he replied, "1955." We looked at each other, confused, and asked, "You mean you died BEFORE you were born?" The message indicator circled the board wildly for a moment then spelled out,

"O - O - P - S"

Then stopped and refused to move, effectively ending our session for the night.

Bad spirits that come through the Ouija board will not only pretend to be other people but will also tell you things that you want to hear.

The more they do this the longer you will stay!

There are several things that you are supposed to follow when using a Ouija board to ensure that you stay safe.

They do not necessarily work but they are ones that people believe.

Popular ones are:

q       Making a circle of salt around you in a clock wise direction to stop bad spirits entering the circle

q       If the planchette repeatedly makes the number eight or goes to the four corners of the board it is being controlled by an evil spirit

q       The board should be closed after use or the evil spirits will escape from the board and haunt your house

q       You should never burn a Ouija board because they will scream when burnt, if you hear this scream you will only have 24 hours left to live

q       The correct way to dispose of a Ouija board is to break it into 7 pieces, say the lords prayer whilst sprinkling it with holy water and then burying it

You do not need to buy a Ouija board as they can easily be made.

You can either write letters on to pieces of paper or use scrabble tiles and arrange them in a circle and use an upturned wine glass as the pointer.

The board may not work for everyone but this does not mean that, should you choose to use it, you should give up after the first failed attempt.

If you do not feel comfortable using the Ouija board at any time, you should not continue to use it.
