Dreams
A dream is an image that we see usually whilst we are asleep. A dream occurs when we are in a relaxed state with a minimal amount of brain activity, so can occasionally occur as a ‘daydream’.
A dream can either be one where you are watching something happening or where you are taking part in what is happening.
Although we remember only a few dreams, it has been scientifically proven that we all dream every single night, usually around 4 to 6 times a night, but as many of these are bad dreams, our subconscious blocks our memory of them.
Young children dream less often than adults.
Whilst asleep, dreams take place during REM sleep (rapid eye movement). This is a time during sleep when our brain can become as active as it is when we are awake although not all areas of the brain are active.
Where a dream comes from and what a dream means still remains one of the questions that we are unable to answer although there are many theories.
In ancient times and in the bible the belief was that, in dreams you leave your body and travel to another place and in some cases that you meet with gods to receive important messages that are to be communicated in your waking life.
From a psychological point of view, dreams are fragments of thoughts and ideas, which mix together and manifest themselves as dreams. They are able to use these dreams to gain an insight into your waking life and work towards easing any problems, which may be affecting your life.
Another theory is that a dream is the place that your imagination and inspiration come from, that the spontaneous ideas we have in the waking are parts of our dreams.
Throughout time it has been believed that dreams hold a message, the answers to the problems in our waking life, the solutions to the things that are bothering us on a daily basis.
There have been many books written with interpretations of what our dreams mean including books by Artemidorus, Nostradamus and Thomas Tryon.
Recurring dreams are usually unpleasant ones.
They contain a hidden message and the fact they are recurring indicates that we have still not found or dealt with the underlying problems.
Lucid dreaming is where you realize that you are dreaming during the dream and you take control. Through controlling the dream and questioning it you are more likely to find the answer or meaning of the dream.
Many things in dreams we think we know could turn out to be something else, the nightmare where you are being chased for example – who says the person chasing you wants to harm you? If you could stop and turn to face them who knows what you may see or what they may do.
Bad dreams such as falling, running etc, are all signs of an unresolved problem.
Nightmares warn us that something is wrong in our life and that if it is left unsorted it could become harmful to us.
When we ignore a nightmare the message will become stronger and the nightmares more frequent and unpleasant.
The most common dreams are:
Being attacked or chased – Represents something we are afraid of in ourselves
Being in a car that is out of control – Indicates that our life is out of control or is too hectic
Being injured – Represent something we are neglecting
Being naked in public – Represents something we are uncomfortable with, possibly within ourselves but we are the only ones viewing ourselves this way
Being trapped – Represents an area of our life where we feel trapped and we need to make changes
Being unprepared/late for/failing an exam – Indicates something we are not prepared for or something we are not confident about needlessly
Death – Indicates that you are lacking something in yourself, if it is the death of someone else that thing you are lacking could be the thing that you are drawn to in that person
Drowning – Indicates that you are blocking your emotions and that you are feeling venerable
Falling – Indicates that there is something that is worrying us
Fire – Indicates the end of something and the start of something new
Moving in slow motion or being unable to move or speak – Indicates that you are feeling stuck in something and that you need to do something to change it
Seeing abandoned animals – Indicates a need for more fun in your life
I am unable to list all dreams here but if you have any dreams not listed above and would like to know what they mean, please email me with as much detail as possible and I will try to find out for you and reply as soon as possible.
